Sami Hamwi, is a pseudonym..
Arabic names have meanings normally, “Sami” is one of the meanings of my real first name. “Hamwi” means “of/from Hama“, and this is where I am from, the great province of Hama. In 2012, after launching Mawaleh, I decided it was time for the world to know that Sami is Mahmoud Hassino, or as friends call me sometimes “Mido”, who started blogging in 2006 but the blog was just meant to be a gay travel guide to Syria.
Having many interests in life, I never thought of myself as an LGBTQI activist. I actually never liked the word “activist”. Yet, I found myself establishing a Syrian LGBTQI magazine, Mawaleh, which made everyone consider me as an activist. Mawaleh is an magazine that saw the light through the efforts of seven Syrian contributors, five of whom are still living in Syria.
While I can write anywhere some nice written articles and views, I meant for this blog to be a personal one; one where I can just write my random thoughts and my crazy ideas. I will be using this blog for writing what is happening to me as well as stating my opinions and using this cyber space the way I prefer to use it.
Finally, narcissism is a characteristic that can be witnessed in the writings and behavior of anyone who is proud to speak out and create something. I am happy to have it in the least annoying way.
